Arunachal woman killed as DEMU train drags SUV 400 metres at Assam   crossing

Dibrugarh, June 5: A 45-year-old woman from Arunachal Pradesh was killed and another person critically injured after a passenger train rammed into a Bolero SUV at an unmanned railway crossing in Assam’s Dhemaji district on Friday afternoon.

The accident occurred around 2:10 pm at the Dekapam Deka–Shantipur unmanned railway crossing near Jonai when the Bolero (AR-02A-1548) attempted to cross the tracks as the Ledo–Murkongselek DEMU Express was approaching.

The train hit the vehicle with such force that it dragged the SUV nearly 400 metres along the track, reducing it to a mangled wreck.

The deceased was identified as Rupa Riba (45), a resident of Arunachal Pradesh. She died on the spot due to severe injuries sustained in the collision.

The driver, also identified by the surname Riba, suffered critical injuries and was first taken to a nearby healthcare facility before being referred to Dibrugarh for advanced treatment, officials said.

Police and railway authorities rushed to the scene and launched an investigation into the incident. A bulldozer was brought in to clear the twisted remains of the vehicle from the tracks, allowing train services on the Ledo–Murkongselek route to resume after a brief disruption.

The accident triggered concern among local residents over safety at unmanned railway crossings in the region.

The body of the deceased was handed over to family members after completion of legal formalities.
