Guwahati, July 18: In a clash between the forest protection personnel and alleged encroachers, a person was killed and seven others injured at Burha Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam’s Sonitpur district on Monday.
One woman was killed while four forest personnel, including divisional forest officer Jayanta Deka, and three civilians from the mob were injured.
“Around hundred people who were evicted in February had again occupied land. Forest officials were attacked when they went to drive them away from the place. The attackers were armed with sticks and machetes,” said a forest official.
He said that encroachers were from Nagaon.
In February, the administration had evicted around 2,500 families from 2,000 hectares of land.
According to the official, the situation got tense and forest officials fired in the air to disperse the mob.
