Guwahati, June 12: In a unique bid to protect critically endangered vultures, which often fall victim to poisoning, ‘Addya Shraddha’ of 11 vultures was held at Ratanpur in Tinsukia district of Assam.
The vultures were found lying dead on the outskirts of the village on June 1. Three vultures, found alive in critical condition, were treated and released on Tuesday.
The staff from Sadiya Forest Range under Doom Dooma Forest Division, Wildlife Trust of India (Tinsukia), local NGOs, villagers, and students participated in the 11th-day death ritual for the 11 vultures.
All the vultures were of endangered Himalayan griffon species except one of the deceased, critically endangered White-rumped vulture.
The vultures were found under a Simul tree on June 1, and the poisoning of a cow carcass is suspected to be the cause of this tragic incident.
Alongside the funeral ceremony, an awareness program was held to emphasize the importance of conserving these endangered vulture species.
