Guwahati, May 3: The first phase of the Assam Panchayat elections concluded on May 2, with an estimated voter turnout of 70.19%, according to state election officials.
Polling was conducted across 14 districts, including Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Cachar, Hailakandi, and the newly formed district of Sribhumi.
Although the overall process was largely peaceful, isolated incidents of disruption led the Assam State Election Commission to order re-polling in 43 booths. These include 31 booths in Hailakandi, 8 in Sribhumi, 2 in Lakhimpur, and one in Golaghat and Majuli. The revised polling dates are expected to be announced soon.
In an early show of strength, the NDA alliance has already secured a significant number of seats unopposed. The BJP has claimed 35 Zilla Parishad and 259 Anchalik Panchayat seats, while its ally AGP has won 2 and 29 seats, respectively. Independents have bagged 15 Anchalik Panchayat seats, followed by the Congress with 9 and AIUDF with 1 uncontested win.

The panchayat structure being contested includes 21,920 Gram Panchayat (GP) member seats, 2,192 GP presidents, 2,192 GP vice presidents, 2,192 Anchalik Parishad (AP) members, 181 AP presidents, 181 AP vice presidents, and 397 Zilla Parishad members. A substantial share of these seats is reserved for women across all levels.
The second phase of polling will be held in the other districts, including Dhubri, South Salmara Mankachar, Goalpara, Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Bajali, Nalbari, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Hojai, Nagaon, Morigaon, and Darrang.
