Guwahati, Apr 10: A 78-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Katha Chema village, Jagun, Tinsukia, along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Shobha Tamang, a resident of Jairampur, Arunachal Pradesh.

According to reports, the incident occurred while she was visiting relatives in Katha Chema village.
“The elephant suddenly emerged from the forest and trampled the woman to death,” said a local resident.

Forest and police officials have reached the site, while locals have called for immediate measures to prevent further tragedies.
Human-elephant conflict continues to take a devastating toll in Assam.

“This is not the first time elephants have entered our village and caused havoc. We have urged forest officials to take steps to prevent such tragedies,” said a villager.
Assam ranks among the top five states reporting the highest number of human-elephant conflict fatalities, with 383 deaths recorded in the past five years.
