Guwahati, May 9: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Assam unit today organized a demonstration against the soaring medicine prices near Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH). Some residents of the City supported the protest, along with family members of a few patients undergoing treatment at GMCH.
Anurupa Dekaraja, a senior spokesperson for the AAP Assam unit, criticized both the central and state BJP governments for neglecting the public’s welfare by allowing the prices of essential commodities, especially life-saving drugs, to skyrocket. “The common middle class is unable to afford treatment even when they are suffering from various ailments,” she stated. Dekaraja further alleged that the price hikes coincided with the BJP receiving substantial donations through electoral bonds from various drug manufacturing companies.
Dekaraja emphasized the stark contrast between the healthcare systems in BJP-ruled states and those governed by AAP. “While AAP governments in Delhi and Punjab provide advanced and free medical services to patients through Mohalla Clinics, the general public in Assam and other BJP-ruled states are deprived of proper healthcare,” she remarked. She urged the Assam government to follow the Delhi model and establish Mohalla Clinics to ensure accessible and affordable healthcare for all.
The protest also saw participation from other AAP leaders, including Anurupa Boro, President of AAP Mahila Shakti, Bollav Patra, President of Kamrup District Committee, and Prabin Sharma, President of AAP Guwahati Metropolitan Committee.
