Shillong, Feb 2: Meghalaya and Assam have decided to wait for the Centre to finalize the border agreement for six of the twelve areas of difference shared between the two states.
The decision was taken at a recently held border talks between the Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma said, “On that meeting with the Assam CM we have come to an understanding in the first six locations.”
“I don’t think we will be having another meeting with the Assam CM (as) we have finalized everything. Now we will wait for the Government of India to call us. Based on that, we will be able to come out with the final resolution for the first six areas of difference,” he informed.
When asked, the chief minister said the two states were able to resolve all the smaller issues that were pending during the final meeting held on January 29.
“…it is difficult for me to explain why we had to continuously meet but once we come up with the reports you will understand because every solution then has a minor fine tuning to be done and there is another village that is there and another stream that is there and another tree that has come in between and we have to take decision on whether we should be around that tree or to the right or the left – so it goes into micro details like that which takes a lot of time to work out,” he added.
The six areas of difference under the first phase include Tarabari (4.69 sq km), Gizang (13.53 sq km), Hahim (3.51 sq km), Boklapara (1.57 sq kms), Khanapara-Pilangkata (2.29 sq kms) and Ratacherra (11.20 sq kms).
