Guwahati, Dec 27: In a major development, Assam police have instituted an enquiry into the death of Dipankar Gogoi alias Tiseng, who was detained for questioning relating to a recent grenade blast at Jorhat district of the state.

Dipankar died a day after he was questioned in what the police has termed “suicidal death”.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Assam Director General of Police GP Singh said, “Reference suicidal death of Dipankar Gogoi@Tiseng of Titabor Jorhat a day after questioning relating to recent grenade blast at Jorhat – An enquiry has been ordered by @assampolice Hq to be conducted by IGP Eastern Range into the incident, including the procedural part, analysing the CCTV footage of police station, contents of report of medical examination at the time of release after questioning etc.”

The DGP also said in his post that the Assam Police remains committed to follow procedures as laid down in law while taking action against criminal and terrorist activities.

On December 14, a “mild blast” was heard in front of an Army camp at Lichubari in Jorhat district. The explosion comes shortly after a grenade blast at Sivasagar district earlier this month.

The United Liberation Front of Asom (I) later claimed responsibility for the blast.

Prior to that, a grenade exploded near the Army Gate of a military camp at Tinsukia district on November 22. Soon after, another explosion was reported from the 149 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp at Joysagar area of Sivasagar district of the state on December 9, 2023.
