Dibrugarh, Dec 27: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat arrived in Dibrugarh on Wednesday for his two-day visit to Majuli. During his two-day visit to Majuli, the RSS chief is scheduled to engage in meetings and discourses with the Satradhikars, the spiritual leaders of the Satras in Majuli.

The RSS chief was welcomed by the RSS pramukhs of the region on his arrival at the Dibrugarh airport at around 3.30pm. He then left for Majuli, situated 150 km away from Dibrugarh, under tight security.

The timing of Bhagwat’s visit is noteworthy as reports have emerged regarding religious conversions among the tribal communities in Majuli, the world’s largest river island. The RSS, known for its advocacy of Hindu nationalism, has long emphasised the preservation of indigenous cultural practices and traditions.

The interaction with Sattradhikars holds particular significance in light of the challenges posed by the conversion of tribals to other faiths. It is anticipated that strategies to safeguard and promote the tenets of the Hindu religion will be at the forefront of these discussions.

Following his visit to Majuli, Bhagwat will return to Dibrugarh, where internal discussions and discourses of the RSS are slated to take place.

The gathering will focus on strategies to address the reported religious conversions and reinforce the RSS’s commitment to safeguarding the cultural heritage of the region, RSS sources said.
