IMD warns of more heavy rain over Northeast; Guwahati braces for another 2-3 days of downpour

Must read

Guwahati, July 13: Even as large parts of Assam continue to reel under heavy monsoon showers, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday warned that moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely to persist over Guwahati and adjoining areas for the next two to three days, raising the risk of urban flooding and landslides.

The latest forecast follows the IMD’s heavy rainfall advisory issued on July 10, with the weather office predicting 6-12 cm of rainfall in 24 hours at isolated places across Guwahati and neighbouring areas.

The IMD cautioned that the continuing spell of rain could aggravate waterlogging, flash floods, traffic congestion and localized landslides, particularly in low-lying areas and vulnerable hill slopes.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said it is closely monitoring the evolving weather situation, with district administrations and emergency response agencies on alert.

ASDMA advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and urged people living in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas to remain vigilant. It also appealed to government offices and other establishments to allow employees to leave early if weather conditions deteriorate.

The warning comes as the IMD issued an Orange Alert for Assam and Meghalaya, forecasting very heavy rainfall in parts of the two states. Similar alerts have also been issued for Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal.
Meteorologists said the fresh spell of rain could lead to overflowing rivers and streams, inundation of low-lying areas and disruptions to road and rail transport across parts of the Northeast.

The latest forecast follows days of widespread rainfall that has already triggered floods, landslides and road blockades in several parts of the region, including Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, with authorities maintaining a close watch on vulnerable locations.

ASDMA has urged the public to rely only on official weather bulletins and advisories as the active monsoon conditions are expected to persist over the region.
