Assam: “Buddy Bands” Connect Experienced and First-Time Voters in Assam

Must read

Boko, April 30: In a pioneering effort to empower new voters, the Kamrup Election District launched the “Buddy Voter” programme, a novel initiative aimed at fostering a culture of voter participation and civic responsibility.

The programme, held at Bimala Prasad Chaliha College in Nagarbera, paired young voters who had cast their ballots for the first time in the previous Legislative Assembly Election with first-time voters. The “buddies” wore symbolic “Buddy bands”, reminiscent of the traditional Rakhi ritual, pledging support and guidance throughout the electoral process.

The initiative, part of the Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) campaign, aims to empower last year’s new voters to act as mentors, sharing their voting experiences and insights with this year’s first-time voters. This helps to demystify the electoral process and alleviate any apprehensions.

The programme received a resounding endorsement from stakeholders, including District Commissioner Keerthi Jalli, Additional District Commissioner Debashish Goswami, and Dr. Kamal Chandra Pathak, Principal of Bimala Prasad Chaliha College.

As the last phase of Lok Sabha elections in Assam draws near, the “Buddy Voter” programme demonstrates the power of mentorship and community engagement in nurturing an informed and participatory electorate. With the support of local authorities and educational institutions, initiatives like these are poised to empower and inspire future generations of voters.
