Guwahati, April 13: The Assam Cabinet has greenlit an elaborate, year-long celebration to mark the 100th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, one of the most iconic cultural figures of the region and the nation.
The commemorative events will begin on September 8, 2025, and culminate on September 8, 2026, paying tribute to Hazarika’s vast artistic legacy and timeless contributions to music, literature, and cinema.
A 50-member Centenary Celebration Committee will be constituted, headed by the Chief Minister of Assam and comprising eminent personalities from various fields. In a significant move to promote regional unity and cultural pride, the chief ministers of all the other seven North Eastern states will be invited to be part of the committee.

The celebration will span multiple cities across India, including Guwahati, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Arunachal Pradesh—highlighting Hazarika’s pan-Indian appeal and his deep roots in Assam and the Northeast.
In honour of the legend, a prominent institution will be renamed after him, although the Cabinet has not yet disclosed the name of the institution. The government also announced that a biography of Dr. Hazarika will be released and translated into several Indian and international languages to reach a global audience.
To further commemorate his life and impact, documentaries will be commissioned, and the Assam government will pursue the issuance of a commemorative coin through the Union Government.
The Cabinet also resolved to extend invitations to the Prime Minister of India for the inauguration ceremony on September 8, 2025, and to the President of India for the closing ceremony a year later.
