Assam cabinet waives fines for minor traffic violations by two and three-wheelers

Must read

Guwahati, June 27: To give some respite to the citizens of the state, who are already grappling with inflation, unemployment and other economic challenges, the Assam cabinet on Thursday announced a major relaxation in traffic penalties for minor violations by riders and drivers of two and three-wheelers.

The decision was taken during the state cabinet meeting held in Nalbari on Thursday in the presence of state chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other cabinet ministers.

Under the new policy, two-wheeler riders will no longer face fines for lacking documents such as licenses, Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificates, or registration papers.

The official release said, “With a view to reduce undue burden on the citizens, the Cabinet has advised the Transport Department to not levy any fine on two wheelers in absence of documents like license, PUC, registration, etc.”

However, strict action and penalties will continue for not wearing helmets in the case of two-wheelers.

Along with the relaxation, the new policy introduces a warning system for three-wheeled vehicles like auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws. Drivers will receive up to four warnings for rule violations before any fines are imposed.

The cabinet expects that the relaxation in traffic penalties will benefit a large section of society, like students, gig workers, delivery partners, and public transport drivers, among others, by saving their hard-earned money.
