Guwahati, April 28: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday that the attack on Congress leaders in Muslim minority-dominated areas indicates the party is rapidly losing its traditional support base among minorities.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma pointed out that these areas have historically been strongholds of the Congress, where the BJP does not even have booth-level offices.
Unidentified miscreants attacked Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi and party MLA Sibamoni Bora while they were on their way to attend a panchayat poll meeting in Assam’s Nagaon district.

“I can not understand what is happening to Congress. Juria, Dhing, Rupohi, Lahorighat—if you see the demography, these are not BJP vote bases. BJP does not even have booth committees in these areas. Congress has alleged that BJP workers attacked them. If BJP’s popularity has increased there, it will be an amazing affair,” Sarma remarked.
He stressed that the area where the incident occurred is a “hundred percent minority-dominated” and assured that security for Bordoloi had been increased. “Police are taking action, and video recordings are being scanned,” he added.
Narrating the attack, Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi said, “We were on the campaign trail, returning after a meeting in Zengon, when a group of masked men armed with rods suddenly surrounded my car on an isolated stretch of road and launched a rampage. I am certain they knew it was my car.”
