Guwahati, July 29: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday instructed DCs to keep all government functions “simple and solemn” and serve “only vegetarian food”, including visits of the Chief Ministers and Cabinet Ministers.

In his opening remark during the two-day Deputy Commissioners (DC) conference that began in Guwahati, Sarma said: “DCs have been asked to keep government functions simple and solemn. Only vegetarian food must be served in all government functions or whenever there is a visit of Chief Minister or Ministers”.

He further directed that during visit of the Chef Minister to the districts, the cavalcade should not consist more than ten cars, including that of DCs and the Superintendents of Police.

District GDP

The CM also said districts should be “centres of growth” and announced the release of district Gross Domestic Product (GDP) reports from 2025 along with the state GDP report. “We will publish a district GDP report from next year alongside the state GDP report,” he added.

In order to boost “productivity, generate employment and drive growth”, Sarma said each district should be “centres of growth”. “We need to determine each district’s contribution towards Assam’s GDP, so they can act as centres of growth,” the Assam CM said.

Emphasising identification of core strength of each district by the DCs, Sarma said these core strengths of the districts should be worked upon so that the growth of the state is accelerated.

He directed DCs to visit and supervise construction of government infrastructure and get directly involved in works related to the health, education and Anganwadi centers in their respective districts.

Instructing DCs to transform districts as “fulcrum of administration”, the CM added an efficient administration at the district level would ensure better disbursal of government-related benefits to the people.

Sub-districts to be created

Moreover, sub-districts would be created from 2nd October, 2024, which Sarma termed as a “vital policy to decentralise administration”. Outlining the plan, Sarma said, a core team would be constituted at the state level to support the DCs to delegate work at the sub district level.
