Guwahati, April 13: Marking a significant leap in cancer care and surgical innovation, Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today inaugurated North East India’s first-ever onco-robotic surgery facility at the State Cancer Institute, located within the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) premises.

The state-of-the-art robotic surgery machine, procured under the Central government’s NPCDCS (National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke) scheme, comes at a cost of ₹14.99 crore. Built with ‘Make in India’ technology, the system offers enhanced surgical precision, 3D visualization, and reduced blood loss—significantly improving outcomes for cancer patients. It features universal safety systems, an articulating endoscope, and the latest software-enabled camera control.

Dr. Sarma also announced plans to expand this advanced facility to Dibrugarh and Silchar, ensuring access to high-end oncological care for patients in Upper Assam and the Barak Valley. He further emphasized that the state has taken coordinated steps to train doctors in operating the new system and is in the process of establishing nursing colleges across all cancer hospitals in Assam.
