Guwahati, June 23: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has initiated a high-level inquiry into the killing of two suspected poachers at the Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam’s Nagaon district, on Saturday morning.
The deceased, identified as Sameer Uddin (35) and Abdul Jalil Uddin (40), residents of Sutirpar village in Nagaon, were reportedly shot during an encounter with forest guards on Saturday.
The Assam Forest Department stated that the two men were intruders armed with sharp weapons and attacked the forest guards, leading to the fatal shooting. However, local villagers have disputed this version of events, alleging that the two were not poachers and had gone to the sanctuary for fishing.

Responding to the allegations, Chief Minister Sarma directed the Chief Secretary to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. Taking to his social media handle on X (formerly Twitter), he said, “Last night, individuals from Sutirpar village trespassed into Lawkhua-Burachapari Reserve Forest. During an encounter with patrolling forest guards, a guard opened fire in self-defense, resulting in the deaths of Samaruddin (35) and Abdul Jalil (40). I have directed the Chief Secretary of Assam to immediately constitute an inquiry to investigate the incident thoroughly.”
The probe aims to uncover the truth behind the incident and determine whether there was any misconduct or misuse of power by the forest guards.
