Guwahati, Jan 28: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), already introduced in Uttarakhand, would eventually be implemented across the country, including in Assam.
“Uttarakhand has brought Uniform Civil Code (UCC). It will be implemented across the country, and then it will be implemented in Assam too,” Sarma told reporters.
He clarified that Assam’s approach is currently focused on specific reforms, particularly the Muslim Marriage Registration Bill, which mandates marriage and divorce registration through government-appointed sub-registrars instead of traditional Qazis. “Our next step is banning polygamy, which will come soon. We are waiting for judicial comments on Uttarakhand’s UCC and monitoring developments closely,” Sarma added.
The Chief Minister emphasized that Assam does not aim for a comprehensive UCC at this stage, explaining, “Our line of action is different. We are working against child marriage and the exploitation of women. Our stance focuses on these issues.”
In August 2024, the Assam Assembly passed the Muslim Marriage Registration Bill, making it a legal offense to register a marriage involving a minor. It also transferred the authority for Muslim marriage and divorce registration from Qazis to government officials.
Additionally, the state repealed the Assam Moslem Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1935, with the Assam Repealing Bill, 2024, replacing it with the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages.
