Guwahati, May 6: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Borah on Thursday visited ULFA(I) commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah’s residence at Jerigaon in upper Assam’s Dibrugarh.

Borah talked with the family members of Paresh Baruah. He interacted with Paresh Baruah’s elder brother Bikul Baruah for hours.

Talking to media persons, Bhupen Borah said, “For past many years, our Congress party wants a peace between ULFA(I) and government. The Congress party had initiated the peace process between the ULFA(I) and the government when our government was in power in both Centre and State. We want complete solution between ULFA(I) and government.”

He further said, “I have heard the statement of both ULFA(I) chief Paresh Baruah and Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Instead of taking all credits, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma should take the matter seriously and work productively to end the decade old insurgency problem of Assam.”

“If the government wants anything from us, then we will be ready to help the government to end the decade old insurgency problem,” APCC chief further said.

After being sworn-in as the chief minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma directly appealed ULFA(I) chief Paresh Baruah to shun path of violence and join peace talks.

The ULFA(I) chief has also welcomed chief minister’s appeal and praised CM Sarma’s effort.
