Guwahati, May 5: Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday said the party accepts the people’s mandate in the Assembly elections and will continue to work for the state’s development both inside and outside the legislature.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Gogoi congratulated the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on its victory and expressed hope that the new government would address key public concerns. “We hope the government will work towards solving the problems of the people of Assam,” he said.
He noted that several issues raised by the Congress during the campaign—such as artificial floods and governance gaps—remain unresolved. Gogoi also acknowledged internal challenges within the party, saying these would need serious reflection going forward.

“We did not win as many seats as we had hoped. However, even outside the Assembly, we will continue to fulfill our responsibility to protect the Constitution, safeguard democracy, and work in the interest of common citizens,” he said, adding that the party would continue to offer constructive suggestions to the government.
Thanking voters for their support, Gogoi said the party would work on improving its organisation and outreach. “We are disappointed that we could not meet all expectations, but we will continue engaging with people and learning from their feedback,” he said.
He also announced that a meeting of party candidates would be convened in Guwahati soon to review the election process, including administrative conduct, EVM handling, and adherence to the model code of conduct.
Referring to Congress’s vision for a “new Assam,” Gogoi said the party would continue to pursue that agenda from the opposition benches.
He expressed gratitude to voters in Jorhat, acknowledging their continued support while admitting the party fell short in the Assembly polls despite earlier success in the Lok Sabha elections.
Gogoi further said the Congress would closely monitor the government’s performance. “If there are mistakes or corruption, we will raise those issues. The people of Assam are watching,” he said, while also flagging concerns about transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
Reaffirming his commitment to democratic values, Gogoi said he stands with Rahul Gandhi in defending the Constitution and safeguarding democratic institutions.
