Shillong, March 30: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Saturday led a protest rally at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati, condemning what they claim to be illegal tax imposition by the Income Tax department on the Indian National Congress (INC).
Under the leadership of prominent figure Mira Borthakur and accompanied by numerous Congress members, the protest aimed to denounce the alleged taxation on the INC, which the party sees as a challenge to democracy.
This protest in Guwahati follows a nationwide movement initiated by the Congress party against what they term as an “egregious attack” on democracy and the imposition of “tax terrorism” by the Income Tax department. The Congress alleges it has received fresh notices demanding over Rs 1,800 crore in taxes.
In response, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K C Venugopal has instructed all Pradesh Congress Committees (PCCs) to organize large public demonstrations across the country.
These protests are scheduled to occur over the weekend, with participation expected from senior leaders and party officials.
The decision by the Congress to mobilize nationwide protests highlights its strong opposition to what it perceives as unjust targeting by the Income Tax department, particularly during the critical Lok Sabha elections.
