Guwahati, Jan 19: Assam’s contingent is ready to compete in the 38th National Games, scheduled to take place in Uttarakhand.

At a grand send-off and kit unveiling ceremony at Sarusajai Stadium, Union Minister and Assam Olympic Association (AOA) President Sarbananda Sonowal extended his best wishes to the athletes. The event saw the presence of Assam Ministers Nandita Garlosa, Pijush Hazarika, and Jayanta Malla Baruah, alongside AOA General Secretary Lakhya Konwar.

Addressing the gathering, Sonowal said, “Assam is emerging as a powerhouse of sports talent. I am confident that our athletes will exhibit an indomitable spirit and stellar performances, bringing glory to the state at the National Games. Discipline, dedication, and focus must guide them in this journey.”

Quoting cultural icon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, Sonowal remarked, “‘This world is a sports arena, and sports are the playground of peace.’ Sports foster peace, harmony, and excellence in body and mind. Events like the National Games provide a platform for athletes to shine and nurture their potential.”

Highlighting Assam’s progress in sports, Sonowal attributed the growth to transformative initiatives over the past decade. “Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s sports ecosystem has evolved remarkably. Assam has hosted major events, including the South Asian Games, Khelo India Youth Games, FIFA U-17 World Cup matches, and the AIBA Youth Women’s World Boxing Championship, placing the state firmly on India’s sports map,” he said.

Sonowal also praised the AOA for its initiatives, such as the Assam Youth Olympics in 2022, which uncovered talent across the state. “We are committed to providing comprehensive training and support for our athletes. I believe this contingent will surpass previous medal tallies and bring laurels to Assam,” he added.

Underscoring the broader significance of sports, Sonowal emphasized, “Nations that excel in sports achieve success in other domains too. Sports instill discipline, resilience, and positivity, contributing to individual and societal development. Assam must lead in sports to fulfill the vision of becoming one of India’s top five states. I am optimistic that our athletes will deliver inspiring performances.”
