Assam: Customs Seizes Foreign Brands Worth Nearly ₹1 Crore near Guwahati Airport

Must read

Guwahati, April 30: In another crackdown on cigarette smuggling, the Anti-Smuggling Unit of the Customs Guwahati Division has confiscated a massive haul of foreign-origin cigarettes valued at a staggering Rs. 1 Crore. The seizure, which took place on the premises of the India Post NPH in Mirza near Guwahati Airport, included assorted brands such as Marlboro Gold, Benson & Hedges, Esse Light Super Slim, and Win.

This latest bust comes on the heels of a similar operation carried out just a day earlier, on April 28, at the same location. During that raid, the Customs Department had intercepted a consignment of smuggled foreign-origin cigarettes worth a whopping ₹2.86 crore, recovering 113 packages filled with various contraband brands.

While no immediate arrests were made during the latest operation, the Customs Department has remained tight-lipped about the identities of the individuals involved in this intricate smuggling network. Authorities are currently conducting a thorough investigation to trace the entire network behind this elaborate smuggling effort.

The back-to-back busts highlight the escalating challenge faced by law enforcement agencies in curbing the illicit trade of foreign cigarettes, which not only deprives the government of legitimate tax revenue but also poses potential health risks to consumers due to the unregulated nature of the products.

These foreign cigarettes are typically smuggled from Myanmar, entering India through various routes before being distributed across Guwahati and other parts of the country.
