Guwahati, Jan 11: The rescue operation at the Umrangso coal mine in Assam’s Dima Hasao district recovered another body on Saturday morning, bringing the death toll to two.
The body, identified as Lijan Magar, 26, a resident of Kalamata in Dima Hasao, was retrieved by Army and NDRF personnel around 7:30 am.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his condolences on social media platform X, stating, “Rescue efforts in Umrangso continue with unwavering resolve. Tragically, another body was recovered this morning, with the identity yet to be confirmed. Our hearts go out to the grieving, as we hold onto hope and strength in this difficult time.”

The rescue teams remain engaged in their desperate search for the remaining seven miners trapped in the flooded coal mine since January 6.
Earlier, on January 8, Army divers from the 21 Para Special Forces recovered the first body, identified as Ganga Bahadur Shrestha, a resident of Udayapur district, Nepal.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarma clarified the status of the mine, stating that the Umrangso coal mine was declared abandoned 12 years ago, but it was not illegal.
Rescue operations are ongoing as the teams work tirelessly to save those still missing.
