Assam Dhakuakhana case: Presumed murder victim now prime suspect of murder, case transferred to CID

Must read

Guwahati, June 27: The Dhakuakhana murder case of a local contractor in Assam has taken a sensational turn by becoming a case of mistaken identity with the murdered victim now becoming the prime suspect in the case.

The case has also been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police on Thursday. Assam DGP GP Singh announced the transfer of the case on X on Thursday, stating, “In the interest of expeditious investigation of recent crime at Dhakuakhana, Lakhimpur District, the investigation of both the connected criminal cases has been transferred to CID.”

Initially, the charred and beheaded body which was recovered on June 2 in Sapatia Chetia village under Dhakuakhana police station, was presumed to be of local contractor Sunil Gogoi. But later on, the incident became a complex case of mistaken identity and possible insurance fraud. Based on DNA evidence, the case took a twist as the victim, once thought dead, has become the prime suspect and absconder.

The decision comes after a DNA report confirmed that the beheaded and partly charred body recovered on June 2 was not of Sunil Gogoi but that of Jahangir Hussain, a resident of Dhubri district who worked as a mason under Gogoi.

Gogoi’s family members alleged that he was murdered in retaliation for his complaint with the Assam Vigilance Department related to alleged corruption in the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) schemes. The vigilance department had also arrested a senior PHE official from Guwahati on Sunil’s complaint.

However, based on DNA evidence, on June 19, Lakhimpur police SP Aparna N. disclosed that the body belonged to Jahangir Hussain, a mason employed by Gogoi. Police suspect the crime may have been motivated by a Rs 41 lakh insurance policy that Sunil Gogoi had purchased shortly before his suspicious disappearance.

After the sensational revelation, Sunil Gogoi, once presumed dead, is now considered a prime suspect in the murder and a case was registered (Case No. 48/2024 U/S 120(B)/302/201/34 IPC) against him and his family members at the Dhakuakhana police station.

The whereabouts of Sunil Gogoi remain unknown to the police.

Meanwhile, reacting to the latest developments in the case, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday expressed confidence in the state police, stating, “The Assam Police have previously solved many complex cases. I am certain they will resolve the Dhakuakhana case soon as well.”
