Must read

Guwahati, Oct 22: For the bypolls of five Legislative seats of Assam, most of the political parties have fielded the sons and spouses of MLAs and MPs, both former and sitting ones.

The bypolls will be held on November 13 in Assam.

The major political parties have geared up for the bypolls and started their work to appease the voters.

The Congress has announced Tanzil Hussain, son of Lok Sabha MP Rakibul Hussain as its candidate from Samaguri. Rakibul was a former minister, who vacated the Samaguri seat after he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Dhubri seat in the recent parliamentary polls. BJP has fielded Diplu Ranjan Sarma from this seat.

Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), an ally of the BJP in Assam, has fielded Dipti Mayee Choudhury, wife of MP Phani Bhushan Choudhury from Bongaigaon. The Bongaigaon seat has been an AGP stronghold since 1985. Eight-time Bongaigaon MLA, Phani Bhushan Choudhury won the Barpeta Lok Sabha in the recent Lok Sabha polls.

Recently, in anticipation of Dipti Mayee Choudhury’s candidature as many as 36 AGP leaders, including the district president and secretary, have resigned. Congress has fielded Brajenjit Sinha from Bongaigaon seat.

In Dholai, Congress has fielded Dhrubajyoti Purakayastha, son of two-time former MLA Digendra Choudhary. BJP has given a ticket to Nihar Ranjan Das for this Scheduled Castes constituency. He joined the BJP in 2001 after leaving CPI(M). BJP leader Parimal Suklabaidya vacated the seat as he was elected to the Silchar Lok Sabha seat.

BJP has fielded Diganta Ghatowar from Behali. Congress is likely to leave this seat for its ally –– the Left parties. Grassroots workers of the Congress in Behali constituency have threatened to resign if the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), receives a ticket for the by-polls. Congress is also in talks with Jayanta Bora, a BJP leader who resigned recently from BJP.

BJP’s ally United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) has given its ticket to Nirmal Kumar Brahma for the Sidli seat. He is the president of the party’s Chirang district committee and a former member of the Bodoland Territorial Council. Congress has fielded Sanjib Warle in Sidli.

Polling will be held on November 13, and votes will be counted on November 23. Except the Samaguri seat, BJP and its allies had won all the four seats in the 2021 assembly elections.
