Assam: Floods situation improves marginally, around 18.80 lakh still reeling under floods

Guwahati, July 9: The flood situations in Assam has improved marginally with the numbers of affected persons in 27 districts dropping to around 18.80 lakh on Tuesday after water started to recedes.

According to officials, with six deaths reported on Monday, the toll in this year’s floods, landslides and storm in the state has gone up to 85.

Dhubri is the worst-hit district, with nearly 4.75 lakh residents still affected by the floods and the people are taking shelter in relief camps.

The state administration has set up 543 camps and relief distribution centres in 25 districts, providing care to 3.45 lakh displaced persons.

“We are still reeling under floods. Our houses were damaged in flood waters and we have to take shelter in relief camps to save our lives. Every year floods destroy our lives; it has become curse in our lives,” said Irfan Ali, a farmer in Dhubri.

Multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force, are continuing to carry out rescue operations in the affected areas.

In Upper Assam, floods have caused extensive damages and people were forced to live in relief camps. Dibrugarh is the worst affected in floods after the Brahmaputra River crossed the danger mark and villages were inundated within a day after incessant rain.

In Moran area, floods affected people have temporary set up camps near NH-37 to save themselves from floods.

The Dibrugarh district administration is helping them by providing electricity and other relief materials.
