Meghalaya Govt ready to operationalise two medical colleges, awaits NMC nod

Shillong, July 9: Meghalaya Health Minister, Ampareen Lyngdoh, on Tuesday informed that the National Medical Commission (NMC) would very soon visit the state after the government has expressed its readiness to operationalise a government medical college and a private medical college.

Speaking to media persons, Lyngdoh said, “We have progressed substantially. In fact, the medical authority of India has been appraised of the fact that Meghalaya is now ready to at least operationalise one government medical college and one private medical college.”

“So we are in constant touch with the authority and we are also now handholding and encouraging discussions with the medical associations of Meghalaya as they also have to be put on board. We have also discussed this with NEIGRIHMS as they would give us the guidance and in fact all committees relating to the start of medical colleges. Two or three committees have already been put in place and we are constantly looking at space,” she said.

She informed that the Shillong Medical College will be government run/owned and they will be utilizing the services of presently available hospitals, which are government owned and government run, adding it’s a brown field project as there is enough infrastructure to start the college.

“Now, we just need to make sure that we are able to hire professors, lecturers in various important departments. We may or we may not have these expertise in the state of Meghalaya, so we need to ensure that while we start this institution, there should be no compromise on quality education,” the minister said.

Informing that the NMC is likely to visit Meghalaya very shortly, Lyngdoh said, “There were already personnel of NMC coming to the state of Meghalaya. we already have expert committee and various people, whose experienced we have required to give us further guidance on the matter.”

She informed that the government is targeting to start the Shillong medical college by 2025-26.

“It is a deadline; it is very difficult but we hope to achieve it.”

Stating the government is exploring all possibilities, Lyngdoh said, “There are few more steps we need to take, we are going to make sure that this is done and we are already looking at working closely with the army and paramilitary forces as they have some contacts, good facility in and around the Northeastern region and request them to help us.”

Asked, the minister informed that Vice Chancellor of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has invited secretary incharge health to engage actively to under the requirement, the procedures and the processing of affiliation.
