SHILLONG, JUL 21: The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) on Tuesday demanded action against a BJP youth wing leader for his alleged comments on the NEET protests in Delhi, calling the remarks “disgraceful” and “unprofessional.”
At a press conference in Shillong, MPYC general secretary Derrick Jyrwa said the leader, who is an advocate, had made statements suggesting violence against protesting students.
“Where is his ethics as an advocate? This is very unprofessional. We condemn him,” Jyrwa said.
“We have all seen what is happening in Delhi. Youths are being beaten up. For someone from Meghalaya to make such a statement is shameful. You cannot say people who are protesting should be killed,” he added.
Jyrwa said the comments showed a lack of “common sense” and reflected poorly on the BJP as a whole.
He urged the party to take action and demanded that the leader step down.
On possible legal action, Jyrwa said, “Not yet. We will sit and discuss the next course. If there is no response from the BJP, we will go ahead with protests.”
Seva Dal State Chief Organizer Banphira Basaiawmoit said the statement was unacceptable to all citizens.
“What this person posted on social media reflects the BJP’s attitude toward youth. We have seen police action against students in Delhi. Paper leaks are not a joke. Students and families across the country, including rural areas, invest years and money preparing for exams,” Basaiawmoit said.
He said the incident should be an “awakening” about how people in power view students.
“This is not just a Congress issue. This is about the future of our society. Students who want to be doctors and engineers have lost faith in the system,” he said.Basaiawmoit added that the Congress and Youth Congress have been supporting student protests over the last two months.Delegation to go to Delhi
The MPYC also announced it will send a 4-member delegation to Delhi on July 22, 2026.
“We will meet party leaders, protesting students, and other stakeholders including CJP leaders. We will also meet students who were beaten during yesterday’s protest,” Basaiawmoit said.
“The purpose is to show that the youth of Meghalaya stand with students across the country. We are going not just symbolically. We want a fair and transparent system where students are not let down,” he said.
