Guwahati, Dec 1: In a major breakthrough against wildlife crime, the Biswanath Wildlife Division of Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve (KNP&TR) has thwarted a significant poaching attempt, recovering a rifle and two rounds of ammunition from the park’s fringe area near Gohpur.
The weapon, reportedly sourced from a neighbouring state, was intended for the poaching of rhinos inside the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, teams from the Eastern Range, Gamari, and the Crime Investigation Range, Panibharal, conducted an extensive search operation leading to multiple arrests.
Officials confirmed that seven individuals were involved in the attempted poaching. One of the accused, Biswarup Mili (also known as Dakkar Mili) of Raonamukh, was arrested on November 30 and produced before the SDJM Court in Gohpur, which granted three days of forest custody.
Four more accused—R Pegu, Birgu Pegu, Bimal Pachung, and Siva Guru Pachung—have also been arrested and will be produced before the court. Another accomplice, Dipen Pegu, already in judicial custody for his alleged involvement in a separate tiger bone trafficking case registered on November 22, has been linked to the operation. Meanwhile, Girish Pegu has been detained for further interrogation.
Forest officials said the operation was launched after credible intelligence inputs and followed by rigorous field action and interrogation. They credited the success to the swift coordination of forest personnel and crucial support from local villagers, who shared information and assisted the teams.
Authorities noted that 12 individuals have been arrested over the last 10 days in connection with poaching-related activities, underscoring the heightened vigilance of the forest department and the increasing number of thwarted attempts.
The department has expressed gratitude to the local communities for standing with conservation efforts and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Kaziranga’s iconic wildlife from organised poaching networks.
