Assam: Forest patrolling party recovers carcass of rhino in Kaziranga NP

Guwahati, Oct 02: A forest patrolling party recovered a carcass of a rhino in the fringe area of Burapahar range in the sixth additional area of Kaziranga National Park in Assam’s Nagaon district on Sunday.

According to forest department, the rhino died due to infighting but the post-mortem report will determine the exact cause of death.

Nagaon divisional forest officer Suhaas Kadam said, “During a routine patrolling, our forest staff noticed a carcass of rhino at around 6 a.m. in the fringe area of Burapahar range in the suxth additional area of Kaziranga National Park near Kamakhya range forest under Nagaon division. The rhino appears to have succumbed to the injury caused by infighting between rhinos,”.

“No sign of poaching noted and all parts of the carcass, including horn, are found intact. We are waiting for the post-mortem report,” he said.

Last year, the state achieved a zero-poaching record for the first time since 1977.

According to official figures, 191 rhinos were poached in Assam between 2000 and 2021. The highest 27 rhino deaths each were recorded in 2013 and 2014 and the lowest in 2020 and 2021 (two each).

Assam’s Kaziranga National Park (KNP) – located in the floodplains of the Brahmaputra river – is the biggest habitat for one-horned rhinos globally and draws in visitors from across the globe.
