Assam: Gaon panchayat secretary shot dead in Bongaigaon in broad daylight

Guwahati, June 27: Tension and shock gripped the Bongaigaon district of lower Assam on Wednesday afternoon as a 56-year-old Gaon Panchayat (GP) secretary was shot dead by unknown assailants in broad daylight. The incident occurred outside a roadside tea stall at Kashidoba village under Bongaigaon Sadar police station at around 3 PM.

The deceased GP secretary has been identified as Chandra Kanta Das, a resident of Bowali Mari village under Abhayapuri police station.

Eyewitnesses said two young motorbike-borne assailants involved in the shooting were seen inside the tea stall minutes before the incident.

The deceased GP secretary also had tea in the same tea stall. He was shot in his head from point-blank range when he was about to board his car parked outside the tea stall and died on the spot.

The assailants then escaped the scene on the same motorbike.

Police later arrived at the scene and started a preliminary investigation. An empty bullet shell, supposedly of a pistol, was seized from the crime scene. Police have sent the victim’s body to Bongaigaon Civil Hospital for postmortem.

“Investigation is on, and we will soon disclose the motive of the incident,” said Bongaigaon SP, Mohan Lal Meena, who also visited the spot.

Nabadeep Pathak, the Bongaigaon district commissioner, also reached the spot and took stock of the situation.
