Assam gets both Covishield and Covaxin

Guwahati, Jan 13: Ahead of the national rollout of Covid 19 vaccination Assam became the first state in the Northeast to have received both COvishielf and Covaxin vaccines. The state has registered about 2 lakh health workers for the first phase of inoculation, the state till Wednesday has received more than 2 lakh doses, 50 percent of the 4 lakh doses that the state needs.

This also includes over 20 thousand doses of Covaxin that reached the state on Wednesday from Hyderabad. Meanwhile, the state health department has readied a three tier vaccine story network of cold chains, developing a capacity of storing 3 cores doses of vaccines across the state, health department officials told reporters.

“We had selected 74 vaccine sites for phase 1, but now the center has asked us to reduce to 59 and we are told there is a reduction in other states as well, the center has also asked us to rollout covaxin so we have started planning,”  Assam‘s Director of Health Services Munindra Nath Nagtey told reporters.

While Assam has a central dedicated covid 19 vaccine stores in Guwahati, five other regional storage units have been now set up across the state where the vaccines have been dispatched already, health officials added.

Each of the districts have their one vaccine storage facility, and beyond the districts level Assam has developed a network of 700 smaller cold chains, officials further added.

On Wednesday, the first batch of covid vaccine has reached Tripura, Manipur, Sikkim, Nagaland as well.
