Guwahati, Feb 8: “Assam government will not give any land to Meghalaya”, Border Protection and Development Minister of Assam Atul Bora said in the ongoing Budget session of Assam Assembly on Wednesday.
At a time when talks are ongoing between both the states to resolve the interstate border dispute in the remaining six areas of contention, the Assam government has made it clear that it is not going to betray the sentiments of the Assamese people.
Minister Atul Bora said that the two states are moving ahead by taking feedback from residents of the disputed places and the administrations of both sides.
While reacting to allegations by Sivsagar MLA Akhil Gogoi that the Assam government was abandoning its rights over constitutionally received land to Meghalaya, to this Atul Bora said that there is no question of giving away Assam land to Meghalaya.
It needs to be mentioned that, Assam and Meghalaya have a longstanding dispute in 12 areas along the 884.9-km-long interstate border. However, the two states had, in 2022, signed an agreement in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to resolve the dispute in six areas.
Of the 36.79 sq km of disputed areas taken up for settlement in the first phase at six places, Assam got 18.46 sq km and Meghalaya received 18.33 sq km.
