Guwahati, Aug 4: In a major announcement that is certain to create ripples in the political landscape of Assam and points towards a stormy Assam Assembly to be head later this month, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday announced that his government will introduce a new law criminalizing ‘Love Jihad,’ with provisions for life imprisonment for those found guilty, as well as stopping sale of land of a particular community.
The Chief Minister made this announcement while addressing an extended session of the BJP’s state and executive meeting in Guwahati.
Referring to the BJP government’s commitment to stop ‘love jihad’ during the elections, CM Sarma said, “We will soon bring a law by which there will be life imprisonment punishment for those involved in ‘Love Jihad’. We will secure the rights of Assamese people one by one. The more Congress tries to shake us, the more we will progress steadily.”
He informed that a new anti – love jihad legislation will be introduced in the Monsoon Session of the Assam Assembly later this month.
He also announced that government will introduce a new domicile policy under which only those born in the state will be entitled to government jobs. Here also he referred to a certain community that got 30 percent of Assam Police jobs during the Congress regime.
“During Congress, 30 percent of Assam Police jobs were offered to a certain community. But now you may know who is getting jobs in the government jobs. We are publishing a book on this,” he said.
Sarma stressed that his government has prioritised the indigenous people in the “one lakh government jobs” provided as per a pre-poll promise, which will be cleared once the complete list is published.
Further, he said sale of land between different religious communities will be regulated, and the Chief Minister’s clearance will be required for such transactions. He said thousands of hectares of land have gone to the dominion of a certain community people, but now all will be brought back under the dominion of indigenous people.
“The BJP government has also decided on the sale of land between Hindus and Muslims. Even as the government can’t prevent such a transaction, now one has to get the consent of the chief minister before going ahead with the land sale and purchase,” he said.
He further announced that the land of indigenous and backward people will no more be transferable.
Making a special mention of Goalpara, he said undivided Goalpara district was an integral part of Assam and was a great glory for Koch Rajbongshi people. But people of a certain community snatched away land from indigenous people. Sarma said the government will introduce a new bill to prevent this. “There will be a law that will prevent a particular community from buying land in Goalpara. Our land will not be sold to a special community,” he said.
