Guwahati, May 5: Anan Tanti, the accused in the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl, was shot in in his leg while he tried to fled from police. Tanti was brought to Margerita civil hospital for treatment later doctor referred him to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh.
The Tinsukia police apprehended Anan Tanti after conducting a manhunt that began after the girl’s body was found in a septic tank at Jayanagar in Margherita.
Anan Tanti had been hiding in the Deomali area along the Assam-Arunachal border.
It may be mentioned that the minor girl went to watch a Bihu programme on April 30, but as it was late, so she stayed at the residence of Anan Tanti.
On Wednesday evening, Margherita police recovered the body of the minor girl from a septic tank.

According to sources, Anand Tanti allegedly raped the minor and later killed her and dumped her in a septic tank.
“The minor girl went to watch a Bihu programme on April 30, but due to late programme, the girl stayed at the resident of Anand Tanti. The minor girl’s family had a good relation with Anand Tanti family. Anand Tanti took advantage of the situation, raped the minor girl, killed her and later dumped her body in a septic tank,” said a police official.
Police have also arrested the wife of Anan Tanti and she revealed that her husband had committed the crime.
The situation in Margherita is tense after the recovery of the body.
“The family members of the minor girl lodged a missing compliant at the police station and based on the compliant, we have launched an investigation and on Wednesday evening (May 3), we have recovered the body of the minor girl from the septic tank of Anand Tanti’s residence,” said a police official.
The discovery of the body has sparked outrage in Margherita, and angry protesters gathered at the local police station on Thursday demanding capital punishment for the accused.
On Thursday morning, agitated public blocked the highways for hours demanding capital punishment of the accused.
