Shillong, Aug 23: The Jaintia National Council (JNC) on Wednesday urged the respective regional committees of Assam and Meghalaya for Jaintia Hills to conduct a historical survey so that the border talks between the two States will ensure that the historical background of the Pnar community will be kept into consideration.
JNC president Sambormi Lyngdoh said if there are no documents to decide, then they should look into the ethnicity and cultural practises of the Pnar people.
Lyngdoh claimed that the decades-old border dispute between Meghalaya and Assam has led many areas of the Pnar like Labang Nongphyllut Elaka under Block 1 and some villages under Nartiang Elaka to fall under the jurisdiction of Assam whose culture and linguistics are totally different from those of residents of Assam.
“We appeal to the government of Meghalaya and Assam to respect the historical background of the Pnar community and to also use the history as one of the indicators during the settlement of the remaining six areas of differences” said Lyngdoh.
He further stated that the Pnar community has a unique history right from the time of U Woh Kiang Nangbah who had fought for freedom against the British but later most of the villages of the Pnar community were transferred to Assam, before Meghalaya attained its statehood.
Asked if the people are facing any threats from the neighbouring state, Lyngdoh said the statement of Karbi Students’ Association on creating a Manipur like situation if they lose their land to Meghalaya seems like a threat to the Pnar community. “We want the government to take action on this, and the government should put up a strong force to protect the people living in the border areas,” urged Lyngdoh.
