Guwahati, June 26: In yet another heart-wrenching outcome of the ongoing human-elephant conflict in Assam, a 14-year-old girl died in a wild elephant attack in Assam’s Tamulpur district last night.
Monika Boro, daughter of Ajay Boro and a resident of Bagajuli-Simliguri village under Tamulpur police station, was sleeping at home when an elephant attacked her house and killed her.
Monika was a ninth-grade student at Kumarikata Daogangbari High School.
Locals informed that an elephant, which came out of from herd, attacked their PMAY house. Although the four family members attempted to escape the house, unfortunately, Monika was hit by the elephant and died due to severe head injuries.
Later on, Police and Forest officials reached the spot. Monika’s body was taken to Tamulpur Police Station and then transported to the district hospital for a post-mortem examination.
This tragic incident once again highlights the severity of the decades-long issue of human-elephant conflicts in the state.
As per official data, in 2022, 73 people were killed by elephants and in 2023, the number was 45. Apart from civilians, many forest officials have also lost their lives in elephant attacks. In April this year, Four people, including two forest officials, were trampled to death by a wild elephant in Sonitpur district.
On the other side, more than one thousand elephants lost their life in the last decade in Assam due to Man-elephant conflict and other related incidents.
As per reports, 1,330 elephants died in Assam between 2001 and 2022 in Human-elephant conflict, with causes including natural deaths, electrocution, train accidents, poisoning, poaching, and lightning strikes. However, the actual number, including unaccounted death counts, might be higher.
