The violent clash at Vairengte

The clash between Assam police and Mizoram police along with involvement of residents of Vairengte town from Mizoram took place at the Vairengte town which is located right along the border of Cachar (Assam)-Kolasib (Mizoram) district on July 26, 2021. Mizoram officials say the violence started when around 200 Assam Police personnel along with Cachar district officials came to Vairengte and forcibly crossed the duty posts manned by CRPF and Mizoram police as well as damaging several vehicles that were travelling along the National Highway between Vairengte and Lailapur. The residents of Vairengte town, Kolasib District (Mizoram) were also assaulted by Assam police and tear gas fired at them, resulting in injury to many civilians.

Assam says they had gone to the border town to impose the status quo as new constructions were taking place in the disputed land inside the Assam territory. In the ensuing clash, 5 Assam police personnel were killed and hundreds injured.

At the same time, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga got into a twitter fight with each calling out to each other as being in the wrong and seeking Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s intervention to resolve the burning issue.
