Guwahati, May 3: The first phase of the Panchayat elections in Assam recorded a final voter turnout of 70.19%, according to figures released by the State Election Commission (SECA) on Saturday morning.
Voting took place across 14 districts: Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Sivasagar, Majuli, Jorhat, Golaghat, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi.
Majuli reported the highest turnout at 80.02%, followed by Dhemaji (77.14%) and Hailakandi (73.5%). The lowest turnout was recorded in Sonitpur at 61%.

Voter turnout in other districts is -73% in Cachar, 72.56% in Sivasagar, 72.15 in Jorhat, 71.02% in Charaideo, 71% in Lakhimpur, 69.92% in Golaghat, 68% in Dibrugarh, 64.71% in Tinsukia, 64.51 in Biswanath and 64.10 voter turnout in Sribhumi district.
“The first phase was largely peaceful except for a few polling stations where untoward incidents occurred,” said SEC Secretary Geetartha Barua in a statement.
Repolling has been ordered in 43 polling stations due to disturbances. These include 31 in Hailakandi, 8 in Sribhumi, 2 in Lakhimpur, and one each in Golaghat and Majuli.
