Assam police arrest illegal money lenders in Chirang

Guwahati, Feb 19: In a crackdown against illegal money lenders, Assam police arrested two persons on Sunday in connection with illegal money lending activities in Chirang district, Assam.

The two individuals have been identified as Baharul Alam Khan (74) and Mortuj Ali (44).

After receiving a tip-off, Bijni police conducted an operation and successfully apprehended the two individuals for their involvement in illegal money lending activities.

Bijni Sub-Divisional Police Officer Prasenjit Das and a police team led by Bijni police station in-charge Ritulmani Das conducted a raid and arrested them.

According to police, these individuals were engaged in illegal money lending practices, charging exorbitant interest rates and extorting money from borrowers.

Meanwhile, the two have been taken into custody for further questioning.

Earlier, the Abhayapuri police in Bongaigaon district launched an intensified operation against illegal money lenders and arrested one Washir Ahmed, also known as Dhano.

This action aligns with the Assam government’s recent stance against usury, aiming to provide relief to communities affected by such predatory practices.
