Tinsukia, Feb 29: Tinsukia police arrested three students leaders from Tinsukia, Upper Assam after they organised a protest at Tinsukia Thanachariali demanding repeal of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The arrested leaders have been identified as Raijor Dal general secretary Zahiuddin Laskar, Tinsukia District Chhatra Mukti Sangram Samiti secretary Umananda Moran and Dhubri district Krishak Mukti secretary Ratul Roy.
After the central government announced that ‘CAA’ would be implemented before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti and the Nari Mukti Sangram Samiti, Tinsukia district committee organised a protest in Tinsukia Thana Charali demanding the repeal of CAA.
Earlier, this month, Union Home minister Amit Shah said that CAA which was enacted in 2019, will be implemented before the Lok Sabha elections this year after issuing the rules in this regard.
The CAA, enacted by Parliament on December 11, 2019, has been a subject of intense debate and widespread protest across India.
The CAA amends the Citizenship Act of 1955 to provide a fast-track pathway to Indian citizenship for migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan who belong to Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Parsi, Buddhist, and Christian communities and who entered India on or before December 31, 2014, due to facing religious persecution in their home countries.
