Assam police gun down 4 villagers at Mukroh Village in Jaintia Hills

Mukroh, Nov 22: Four people were killed and 4 severely injured in firing at Mukroh Village in Laskein Block, Jaintia Hills district, on Tuesday morning by the Assam Police.

The village headman said the Assam Police had come down to the village in a truck carrying logs into the village. They then captured the people of Mukroh who were on their fields doing their daily work.

The news reached the local people of the area and they immediately went to stop the truck of the Assam Police and demanded for immediate release of the farmers who were innocent.

The village headman further stated that the Assam police, however, did not listen to the people and opened fire at the crowd.

The deceased have been identified as Si Dhar R/o Samaro Village, Thd Shadap R/o Mukroh, Six Talang R/o Barato Village, and Tang Nartiang R/o Mukroh Village.

The injured people are Elias Samaiang (29) from Mukroh, Sheini Nartiang (48) from Mukroh, and Chirup Sumer (40) from Mukroh village.

Chandame Sungoh, who is the Chairman of the Hynniewtrep Border Dispute Redressal Forum (HBDRF), informed that the Assam Police captured the village farmers without any proper reason.

Furthermore, he informed that the people started to gather and tried to stop the Assam police vehicle and demanded immediate release of the villagers which led to an open firing by the Assam police.

This action by the Assam police has caused extreme panic among villagers and forced them to flee their village and take shelter in the village forests.
