Boko, March 20: Discontent is brewing within sections of the Garo community ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, with several Garo organisations voicing strong resentment over the BJP’s decision to deny a party ticket to Bokajan MLA and Deputy Speaker Dr Nomal Momin.
At a joint press meet held in Bakrapur village near Dudhnoi, the Garo Development Council (GDC), led by president Arbitson J. Momin, along with key community bodies including the Garo Students’ Union, Garo Mahila Parishad, and Garo Sahitya Sabha, expressed “deep anguish and disappointment” over the move.
Leaders at the meeting underscored that Dr Momin is widely seen as the lone representative of the Garo community in the Assam Legislative Assembly, and credited him with driving development in Bokajan while maintaining a clean public image.
The organisations asserted that the Garo community’s consistent support for the BJP has largely been anchored in Dr Momin’s leadership, warning that the decision to drop him has triggered widespread dissatisfaction at the grassroots level.
Questioning the rationale behind the move, Garo bodies demanded clarity from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and BJP state president Dilip Saikia, while highlighting Dr Momin’s developmental track record in the constituency.
Speakers at the press meet concluded with a unified appeal to the BJP leadership to reconsider its decision, terming it crucial for safeguarding the political representation and interests of the Garo community in Assam.
