Guwahati, Dec 19: Forest department officials have detained a person on the charges of killing and eating the meat of leopard in Assam’s Kamrup district on Tuesday.
The person has been identified as Dimbeswar Rabha. Rabha is the organising secretary of Rabha Students’ Union.
Rabha was detained from his Bamunogaon resident in Kamrup.
According to reports, a few days ago, Rabha posted on social media that he killed a leopard and ate the meat of the animal.
The Divisional Forest officer, Kamrup West Division, took the case seriously and detained the person for committing the crime. “We are investigating the case and as per the law we will take strict action against the person if he’s found guilty,” said a forest official.
Leopard is listed in schedule I of Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
“Killing a leopard and eating the meat of the animal will get 7-year imprisonment,” said the official.
