Assam: Rare Marbled Cats spotted in Dehing Patkai National Park

DIBRUGARH, Feb 28: In a rare and exciting discovery, elusive Marbled Cats have been captured on camera traps in Dehing Patkai National Park, Tinsukia.

Digboi Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) T.C. Ranjit Ram confirmed the sighting, stating, “We have spotted 2-3 Marbled Cats in Dehing Patkai National Park and reserve under the Digboi Forest Division during our two-month camera trapping project. The initiative, launched in November 2024 in collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), successfully recorded these rare cats.”

He further added, “The project, conducted jointly with WII, involved setting up camera traps in various parts of the park and reserve forest. We are pleased that our efforts have led to the documentation of this elusive species.”

Assam Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary shared the news on Facebook, calling it “exciting conservation news.” He wrote, “Our camera trap inside Dehing Patkai National Park just captured a rare sighting of the elusive Marbled Cat.”

The Marbled Cat (Pardofelis marmorata ), a small wild cat species found from the eastern Himalayas to Southeast Asia, typically inhabits forests up to 2,500 meters in elevation. Listed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, this sighting offers valuable insights into the conservation status of the species in the region.
