Assam reintroduces moral studies in schools after two decades

Must read

Guwahati, Feb 11: Moral studies has made a return as a compulsory subject for Class VI students in state schools, under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, announced Education Minister Ranoj Pegu on Tuesday.

Initially available in Assamese, the newly introduced textbook will soon be available in multiple languages, including seven tribal languages, ensuring it reaches a broader and more diverse student population.

Speaking at the flagging-off ceremony for the distribution of free textbooks in Guwahati, Pegu shared that the Assam government is set to distribute an impressive 3.4 crore textbooks for the 2025-26 academic session, thanks to the Assam State Textbooks Enforcement and Publishing Corporation. “We’ve expedited the distribution process this year, starting it a week earlier to benefit students,” he added.

In line with the NEP, new textbooks have been rolled out for Classes I to III at the primary level, as well as for Class VI. This move marks the beginning of a gradual expansion to include other classes in the coming years. With an allocation of ₹181 crore, the government is set to transform the way textbooks are published—financed through both the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) for Classes I-VIII and the State-Owned Priority Development (SOPD) fund for Classes IX-XII.

In a bold step towards revolutionizing education, Pegu also unveiled plans to digitize textbooks into e-books and enhance them with interactive audio-visual content through QR codes by the end of this academic year. “This will not only benefit students but also empower teachers by making classroom learning more dynamic and engaging,” he said.

At another event at Assam Administrative Staff College in Khanapara, Pegu distributed essential aids and appliances to Children with Special Needs (CwSN) from Kamrup, Kamrup Metro, and Morigaon districts. Among the aids distributed were tricycles, wheelchairs, cerebral palsy chairs, crutches, braille kits, smart canes, smartphones, walking sticks, and hearing aids.

As part of Assam’s commitment to inclusive education, a total of 9,260 assistive devices will be distributed to 6,464 CwSN beneficiaries across the state, comprising 3,828 boys and 2,636 girls.
