Aizawl, April 3: In a major crackdown, Assam Rifles troopers seized methamphetamine tablets worth ₹12.54 crore in Mizoram on Wednesday.

Acting on intelligence inputs, the paramilitary force conducted raids in the Bualpui area of Lawngtlai district, seizing 42,000 methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as Yaba or party tablets.

The seized narcotics, smuggled from Myanmar, have been handed over to Bualpui Police Station for further investigation.

This marks the second major drug seizure in Lawngtlai district within a week. The district shares unfenced borders with both Bangladesh and Myanmar, making it a key transit point for smuggling activities.

Myanmar’s Chin state is a known hub for drug smuggling, with narcotics frequently trafficked through six Mizoram districts—Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.

Yaba, meaning ‘crazy medicine’ in Thai, is a potent methamphetamine-based stimulant. It was introduced in East Asia during World War II to enhance soldiers’ endurance and has since become widely abused, particularly among youth.

Today, Yaba is the primary form of methamphetamine abused in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Myanmar, where it is typically produced. The tablets, composed of caffeine and approximately 30% methamphetamine, act as a powerful central nervous system stimulant.
