Guwahati, June 10: Security has been beefed up in Assam’s Lakhipur area in Cachar district after violence was reported in Manipur’s Jiribam district, which shares a border with Lakhipur.

As many as 600 people from Manipur have taken shelter in their relative’s home in Lakhipur after violence broke out in Jiribam on June 6, 2024.

Talking to reporters, Cachar superintendent of police Numal Mahatta said, “After the incidents of violence in Manipur’s Jiribam, we have deployed enough security, and our special commando force was deployed in the bordering areas. They are doing regular patrolling. The people are living in a peaceful manner in Lakhipur, and the public has been cooperating with us.”

“Nearly 600 people have taken shelter in their relative’s houses after the violence on the other side of the border. We are regularly monitoring the situation. Everything is peaceful, and we are trying to ensure that the incident in Manipur doesn’t happen in our state. A peace committee has been called in Lakhipur, and our security has been ready for 24 hours,” the SP said.

He said, “If anyone tries to destabilize the peaceful atmosphere of the state, we will take legal action against them. Our chief minister has given us instruction that those people who are coming from the other state due to violence should be given shelter, but proper listing should be done.”

The situation in Jiribam has been increasingly volatile, with local communities on edge due to recent outbreaks of violence. As tensions escalated, many residents left their homes, seeking safety across the border in Assam.

Lakhipur MLA Kaushik Rai said, “No incident has been reported in Lakhipur district. The security has been tightened in the district after the violence in Manipur. Tomorrow, we will organize a peace meeting with all the communities and assure them that no such violence incident will happen in Lakhipur. As many as 600 people were taken shelter in Lakhipur, and most of them have taken shelter in their relatives’ homes.”

Nearly 239 people, mostly women and children, have been evacuated from their villages in Jiribam amid the ongoing violence that broke out after the killing of a man by militants.

On June 6, the Jiribam district administration imposed an indefinite curfew in the district following the killing of a 59-year-old man belonging to one community allegedly by militants belonging to another community.
