Assam: Security forces recover arms and ammunition in Tinsukia

Tinsukia, Aug 31: In a joint operation, security forces recovered arms and ammunition from upper Dehing reserve forest in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district on Saturday.

Taking to X, Assam DGP G.P Singh said, “Continuing our efforts against unlawful weapon holding, One Heckler & Koch SMG, 130 rounds Ammunition, 2 magazines and approximately one KG PEK explosive powder recovered by Police in Tinsukia. Suspected of belonging to a proscribed organization active in Assam-Arunachal border.”

According to police sources, the insurgent groups buried these arms and ammunition in the jungle area to hide them from security forces.

“Counter-insurgency operations have been going on in the Tinsukia-Arunachal Pradesh area. Most of the insurgents use the jungle route. To hide arms and ammunition from security they buried them in the particular area,” said the police source.

Tinsukia Superintendent of Police, Abhijit Gurav, said, “We received an secret information and a joint operation was launched in Upper Dehing reserve forest where we have recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition. It is suspected that the arms and ammunition belong to some insurgent groups.”

“Our operations have been going on in Assam- Arunachal Pradesh boarder area. We suspect that some over ground workers have kept this arms and ammunition in this particular area to hide from security forces,” the SP added.

Earlier, security forces had recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the jungles of Tinsukia district.

Meanwhile, security forces have launched a massive search operation in the upper Dehing reserve forest.

Tinsukia shares boundary with Arunachal Pradesh and it is very easy for insurgent groups to penetrate in the area through jungle route. The insurgent groups can also easily flee to Myanmar after carrying out their activities.

Earlier, Tinsukia district was a hot-bed of insurgency and it had witnessed regular blood-bath.
